PHYSICIAN PRACTICE GROUP OPERATIONS REVIEWS TO IDENTIFY  OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE THE MANAGEMENT OF THE PRACTICE AND CAPTURE ALL PROFESSIONAL FEES TO WHICH THE PRACTICE   GROUP IS ENTITLED

Consulting Resource Associates (CRA) is engaged in helping physician practice groups be "best-practices organizations".  As we work to achieve this outcome, we concurrently attempt to identify how to record, bill and collect all patient care revenues to which the practice group is entitled.  This performance improvement assistance is directly in keeping with CRA's core capability as professionals engaged in helping organizations do all they can to improve performance.  Our initial work in such engagements consists of performing a quick hard-hitting diagnostic review of the physician practice to identify opportunities to streamline key functions, deploy support staff efficiently, and capture, bill and collect for all patient care procedures performed.

Upon completing the diagnostic review, we report our findings and recommendations to the practice group.  Based on the reaction to what we find and recommend, we then prepare a plan to implement agreed upon actions that hopefully will produce the best possible performance and financial outcomes for the practice.  Following are examples of what we address and analyze during a physician practice diagnostic review.

  • The financial acumen of the practice group, including financial planning and management reporting against the financial plan.

  • Actions the practice leadership and administration regularly take to be certain all patient care procedures are captured, billed and collected.

  • Contracts, payment experience and relationships with third party payers.

  • Approach to determining staffing levels, hiring and scheduling of physicians, nurses and administrative staff.

  • Approach to and accuracy of patient information used for patient appointment scheduling and later for billing for services performed.

  • Performance of the contracted billing company, including time to prepare and issue bills, approach and results of collection efforts, end uncollectible accounts experience.

  • Performance of an outside collection agency, if one used.

  • Relationship and experience with hospital(s) where physicians have admitting privileges.

  • Cash and expense management.

  • Performance planning and evaluation practices for physicians, nurses and administrative staff.

  • Approach to malpractice insurance and risk management.

Most often, the physician practices for whom we perform an operations review ask CRA to stay on and work with them to implement agreed upon recommendations .  We work on site during implementation to achieve the planned outcomes, and while so doing, attempt to transfer our knowledge to the practice members and staff. When our work is done, it is our goal that the accomplishments and an understanding of the processes and procedures employed to achieve them and be a "best practices organization" are truly those of the practice group.
